Curriculum Structure

Master's Degree in Law and Regulation

With a minimum length of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years, the Master's course requires the student to fulfill at least 47 credits in formal academic activities, distributed as follows:

 

  • 6 credits for mandatory subjects
  • 12 credits in elective subjects;
  • 24 credits for supervision and presentation of the dissertation; and
  • 5 credits in supervised activities, including

- 1 credit for academic publications;
- 2 credits for participation in Institutional Research Groups;
- 2 free credits in activities previously offered in the PPGD under the terms of the first paragraph of the Regulations or in other equivalent Postgraduate Programs, provided they are previously authorized by the PPGD coordination.

Academic PhD in Law and Regulation

With a minimum duration of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years, the PhD course requires the student to achieve at least 85 credits in formal academic activities, distributed as follows:

  • 3 credits in the compulsory subject "Design and Advanced Research Techniques".
  • 3 credits in a compulsory subject specific to the Program's research area:

- Regulatory Structures Theory: linked to the research area Regulatory Governance, Institutions and Justice; or
- Regulatory Strategies Theory: linked to the research area Economics, Intervention and Regulatory Strategies.
 

  • 15 credits in elective courses.
  • 48 credits in guidance, qualification and thesis submission activities.
  • 16 credits in supervised activities, comprising

- 9 credits for the production of academic works;
- 2 credits for participation in a teaching internship;
- 1 credit for participation in preparatory activities for teacher training on undergraduate courses at FGV Rio Law;
- 2 credits for participation in institutional research groups;
- 1 credit for participation in collaborative activities with the undergraduate program at FGV Rio Law;
- 1 free credit in an activity previously authorized by the PPGD or other equivalent postgraduate programs.

  • Estágio de docência;
  • Participação em projetos, seminários, grupos de leitura ou de pesquisa do PPGD e dos Centros de Pesquisa da FGV Direito Rio, ou, desde que previamente autorizados pela Coordenação, em outros programas de pós-graduação stricto sensu;
  • Participação em atividades de extensão ou outras de caráter técnico-tecnológico relacionadas ao desenvolvimento do PPGD, desde que previamente autorizadas pela Coordenação, especialmente aquelas consideradas importantes pela Capes para  avaliação do curso;
  • Publicação de trabalhos em anais de eventos nacionais ou internacionais;
  • Publicação de livro ou capítulo de livro, antes da defesa da dissertação em tema compatível com as linhas de pesquisa do PPGD;
  • Publicação de artigo em periódico classificado no Qualis, antes da defesa da dissertação em tema compatível com as linhas de pesquisa do PPGD;
  • Participação em cursos internacionais oferecidos no âmbito do PPGD, ou, desde que previamente autorizados, em outros programas de pós-graduação stricto sensu; e
  • Atividades de integração com a graduação da FGV Direito Rio, com exceção do estágio de docência, tais como participação em bancas, field projects e atuação no Núcleo de Prática Jurídica (NPJ).

Each credit corresponds to 15 hours, and each subject has 3 credits. Detailed information can be found in the Course Regulations, available in official communications. Classes and other academic Program activities are held in person at the FGV Centre, at Praia de Botafogo, 190.
