CPDG publishes an update on the new European regulation against deforestation in supply chains

On December 28, 2023, FGV Rio Law’s Centre for Global Law (CPDG) published in Folha de São Paulo an update on the new European regulation against deforestation in supply chains (EUDR).

The text, co-authored by professor Paula W. Almeida and researchers Fernando Rangel and Gabriel Ralile, provides important updates regarding the application of the EUDR, which prohibitions will come into force at the end of 2024, as well as points out some implementation tools adopted by the European Union. Among them, the “European “Observatory on Deforestation and Forest Degradation” stands out: a platform for global monitoring of forests and commodity production and trade.

Furthermore, the text addresses the discussion within the scope of the World Trade Organization (WTO), since the regulation has encouraged a debate regarding its permissibility within international trade rules.

The topic is very important, especially considering the worrying rate of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, and illustrates part of the work that has been carried out by the CPDG team in its “Climate Change and Forests” research line.

The statements provided by staff members of Fundação Getulio Vargas, which inform their identification as such, in articles and interviews published in the media in general, exclusively represent the opinions of their authors and not necessarily the institutional position of FGV. FGV Regulation No. 19/2018.
