Between May 17th and 24th, FGV Rio Law promoted the first edition of the Competition Week, with the intention to encourage discussions from an international perspective on several topics related to competition law. The event took place in Sauipe (Bahia), and in Belgium, at the Centre for European Policy Studies.
The first part of that event, in Bahia, was dedicated to exploring the recent developments relating to platform regulation in Brazil and Latin America, as well as in other key jurisdictions. It featured the participation of Doris Tshepe, Commissioner of the South African Competition Commission, Professor Patrícia Sampaio, from FGV Rio Law, and Eduardo Gaban, Advisor to the International Competition Network, among other high-profile participants.
In the second part, in Belgium, the opening presentation was delivered by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mission of Brazil to the European Union, followed by discussion panels, and a lecture on “Connecting Horizons: Competition and Regulation in Digital Platforms – Brazilian and European Perspectives”, at the Centre for European Policy Studies, in Brussels.
Furthermore, FGV Rio Law professors Nicolo Zingales and Carlos Ragazzo, former General Superintendent and Commissioner of the CADE (Administrative Tribunal of Economic Defense), joined the “Antitrust-related Regulation of Platforms in Brazil and in the EC”, and “Platform Transparency and Accountability Mechanism: A Transatlantic Debate” panels.
To close the event, there were guided visits to the European Parliament and the European Commission, as well as to other places considered important for EU-Brazilian relations.
The Competition Week is part of FGV Rio Law’s international initiatives, supported by the Learning Hub project, to strengthen its globalization actions aimed at promoting joint academic events, education, research and knowledge dissemination within the realm of legal education.
