First Edition of the Regulation Week

From December 4th to 8th, the first edition of the Regulation Week took place at the offices of the global law firm Mayer Brown in Houston, at the headquarters of Brazil’s largest law firm Mattos Filho in São Paulo, at FGV EPPG - School of Public Policies and Government in Brasília, and at the FGV headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, where the closing event was dedicated to the discussion of contemporary regulatory challenges.

The opening featured the participation of FGV’s President Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, and Sérgio Guerra, dean of FGV Rio Law. They welcomed the guests, summarized the week-long event and offered some food for thought regarding modern regulatory approaches.

The first panel, "Designing governmental institutions to protect the environment: How Brazil Can Learn from (some of) the US’s Mistakes," welcomed Wendy Wagner from University of Texas at Austin School of Law and Donald Elliot from Yale Law School, and was moderated by FGV Rio Law’s vice-dean, Professor Antonio Maristrello Porto.

In the second part, former mayor of New York Bill de Blasio, explored the theme "Smart cities: Promises and Disappointments," where he also elaborated on the challenges and opportunities of influencing AI regulation on communal level, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

The Regulation Week is part of FGV Rio Law's strategy to be a national and international hub that brings together research and activities involving regulated sectors, as well as the promotion of Brazil as an international business and economic powerhouse. Throughout the week, promoted by FGV Rio Law's research committees, the events brought together academics, regulators, legal professionals, and other stakeholders to discuss current issues related to regulated sectors in Brazil and around the world.

"The Regulation Week will be held annually. The idea is for it not to be just an academic event but to become a movement that fosters a broad debate on the importance of regulation for national socio-economic development," concluded FGV Rio Law’s dean Sérgio Guerra.
