On September 5th, FGV Rio Law held the webinar “How to Publish in American Law Journals”, delivered by Daniela Branco, Associate Director for Graduate Programs and LL.M. Legal Writing Instructor at Penn Carey Law.
The event aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how to publish their academic work in American law reviews and journals, as well as providing insights into the main differences between legal writing in Brazil and the United States.
In the first part of the webinar, Daniela Branco presented the most common mistakes when structuring an article. She stated that many international students do not follow specific requirements, including formatting guidelines, word limits, and citation standards, leading to the articles’ rejection.
In the second part of the event, she provided an updated list of journals and law reviews that accept submissions by international students, among other helpful insights. However, she also reminded the audience that some publishers only or mainly accept articles from national or even “in-house” academics.
Finally, the webinar was opened for a question-and-answer session, and Daniela Branco concluded by highlighting the importance of adhering to the exact submission guidelines (incl. deadlines) for each journal or law review before submitting an article for consideration.
