Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida presents a topic "Participation of state and non-state actors in proceedings before the International Court of Justice: Opportunities for the EU?" at Norway House in Brussels

On September 5th , Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, FGV Rio Law professor and coordinator of the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, had the honour of presenting the topic "Participation of state and non-state actors in proceedings before the International Court of Justice: Opportunities for the EU?" at Norway House in Brussels. The event was jointly organised with the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies and the Norwegian Embassy to the European Union. The welcome introduction was given by the Ambassador of Norway to the European Union, Rolf Fife, Member of the International Commission of the United Nations. The event was organised and moderated by Professor Jan Wouters, Director of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies.

The presentation aimed to discuss the mechanisms of participation of states and non-state actors before the International Court of Justice and recent developments in the Court's practice in view of the repercussions of the Ukraine v. Russia case at the World Court. Professor Paula analysed the opportunities for the European Union's participation in interstate litigation, as well as the challenges and possibilities of expanding the participation of state and non-state actors in cases involving the interests of the international community.

The event was attended by a select group of academics and members of the European Union's legal service who work directly in representing the organisation before international tribunals.

"There was a rich exchange of experiences between academics and practitioners, in order to analyse the concrete challenges and possible legal alternatives for the European Union to participate more actively in international disputes in politically favourable contexts," says Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida.
