Andreas Follesdal 

Professor

Professor Andreas Follesdal is a renowned scholar specializing in political philosophy and international legal theory. With a focus on the changing role and authority of the state, he has conducted extensive research on topics such as state sovereignty, global distributive justice, human rights, regional human rights courts, regional unions like the European Union, federalism, and the evolving roles of citizens and non-state actors. 

Currently a Professor of Political Philosophy at the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo, Professor Follesdal has made significant contributions to the field. He served as Co-Director of PluriCourts, a Center of Excellence for the Study of the Legitimate Roles of the Judiciary in the Global Order, from 2013 to 2024. He was also the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council Advanced Grant MultiRights, focusing on the legitimacy of multi-level human rights judiciary from 2011 to 2016. Previously, he held positions such as Director of Research at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights and Academic Director of the Nordic Research School in Human Rights. 

Through his extensive academic work, Professor Andreas Follesdal has deepened our understanding of the evolving dynamics of governance, state authority, and the complexities of political philosophy and international legal theory. 

Miriam Cohen

Miriam Cohen is an Associate Professor at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Law, where she holds the Canada Research Chair on Human Rights and International Reparative Justice. Her research encompasses international, public, and human rights law, focusing on topics such as realizing reparative justice for international crimes. She has received prestigious awards and is a co-author of a widely used publication on international law. Professor Cohen leads a research program at the Faculty of Law, exploring international justice, reparation for human rights violations, and the intersection of human rights, technology, and individual empowerment. She is also the founder of the International Justice and Human Rights Laboratory, overseeing interdisciplinary research teams. Before her academic career, she gained valuable experience in international organizations and serves as a consultant and trainer in international law. Professor Cohen is multilingual, proficient in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French.

Uladzislau Belavusau 

Senior Researcher

Dr. Uladzislau Belavusau is a Senior Researcher in European Law at the T.M.C. Asser Institute, affiliated with the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his current role, having previously served as an Assistant Professor of European law and human rights at the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. With a Ph.D. from the European University Institute and an LL.M. from the Collège d’Europe, Dr. Belavusau's research and teaching encompass various areas of EU law, including constitutional and anti-discrimination law, human rights, comparative constitutionalism, and memory politics. 

Dr. Belavusau's academic journey has been enriched by his affiliations with prestigious institutions worldwide. He has held visiting fellowships at renowned universities such as the University of California at Berkeley, Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht, York University, Tel Aviv University, and University of Warsaw. Moreover, he has delivered guest lectures at esteemed institutions including the Hague Academy of International Law, Central European University, and LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome, among others. 

Mariangela Barletta

Mariangela Barletta is currently a Ph.D. candidate in "Public, Comparative, and International Law" (XXXI Cycle) with a specialization in International Order and Human Rights. She is also an intern at the CNR/ITB: Department of Bioethics and Bio-law. 

In terms of education, she obtained a Second-level Master's degree in International Protection of Human Rights "Maria Rita Saulle" in 2020, with a final thesis titled "Genetic Editing and Human Rights," receiving a grade of 110/110. She also completed an advanced training course at the University "La Sapienza" in Rome in 2020 on "The Role of Women in Peace Processes and Mediation of Conflicts for the Protection of Human Rights." In 2015, she earned a Master's degree in Law from the University "Alma Mater" in Bologna, with a thesis in Criminal Law titled "Medical Professional Secrecy: Crime Prevention and Respect for the Patient's Fundamental Rights," achieving a grade of 110/110 with honors. Additionally, in 2014, she completed an Erasmus program in Spain at the University of Alicante. 

Mariangela has gained professional experience through various roles. In 2020, during her Master's degree program, she undertook an internship at the CNR-ITB, specifically at the Department of Bioethics and Bio-law. In 2019, she spent a year working at an NGO in Poland as part of the EVS program. From 2017 to 2020, she collaborated with law firms specializing in criminal, international, and European Union law. She also completed a training internship at the Public Prosecutor's Office in Bologna from January 2016 to July 2017. 

She possesses excellent proficiency in English (C1 level IELTS as of August 2019) and Spanish, as well as basic knowledge of Portuguese and Polish. Mariangela's research interests include bio-law, genetics and law, protection of fundamental rights in the field of medicine, reproductive rights, and gender issues.

Benedetta Arrighini 

PhD Researcher

Benedetta Arrighini is a law graduate at the University of Trento with a thesis in International Criminal law under the supervision of Professor Gabriele Fornasari: Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office, origin, development and perspective of an hybrid tribunal. In this research she compared the transitional justice model of South American countries with the Kosovo’s future process. The thesis was published as a book in 2021. During university she did a traineeship at the European Parliament, working in CULT and ECON Committees. Moreover she was an Erasmus Student in the Law faculty of Montpellier/1. While she was writing her thesis, she did a traineeship with the think tank Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso e Transeuropa in which she wrote article about the EU-Western Balkans relations. After graduation she started legal practice in Criminal law. In 2021-2022 she was an L.L.M student at the College of Europe and she wrote a thesis in European Criminal Law under the supervision of Professor John A.E. Vervaele discussing the Foreign Terrorist Fighters’ Directive and the impact on the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence. She was accepted as GEM DIAMOND Fellow in the Research Position 11, supervised by Professor Anne Weyembergh (ULB) and Professor Paula Almeida (FGV), and Prof. Rossella Sabia (LUISS).

Master's degree in International Law from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) with a research focus on International Arbitration and Private International Law, including research periods at the Università degli Studi di Milano and the University of Cambridge. Graduated in Law from UFSC, with an academic mobility period at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, where studies were focused on International Trade Law. Researcher in the Group of Research in International Law at UFSC (Ius Gentium - UFSC/CNPq) and at the Jean Monnet Module on European Private International Law at UFSC. Recipient of a full scholarship for academic excellence offered by the Hague Academy of International Law to attend the Summer Course on Private International Law in 2019. Member of the evaluation and review committee and founding member of Avant - Academic Journal of the UFSC Law Undergraduate Program. Coach for the UFSC team at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Regional representative of the Moot Alumni Association (MAA) in Brazil and honorary member of the Brazilian Association of Arbitration Students (ABEArb). 

Rita Preto

Rita Preto is a dedicated scholar and researcher specializing in international law. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Católica Research Centre for the Future of Law, situated within the Porto Law School at Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Portugal. Her research focuses on various aspects of international law, aiming to contribute to the development and understanding of this complex field. In addition to her doctoral studies, Rita is currently working as a Visiting Researcher at the FGV Centre for Global Law. This experience allowed her to broaden her perspectives and engage with international legal issues from a different cultural and institutional context. Rita holds a Master's degree in European and International Law from the Porto Law School at Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Her exceptional academic performance earned her the esteemed Professor Baptista Machado Award for achieving the highest distinction in her Masters of Law Dissertation. This recognition further attests to her intellectual prowess and commitment to excellence in legal scholarship.
